Sustainability Symposium 2015: THE BENEFITS OF TREES

Saturday, February 7 8:30 am – 4:00 pm

Joyce Kilmer had it right in his most famous poem, “I think that I shall never see, A poem lovely as a tree.” Trees provide us shade, food, shelter, and magnificence and it’s wise to stop and celebrate them once in a while. And as we begin our new and grander relationship with the Holden Arboretum it only makes sense to do so now.

Awaken from your winter slumber and join us for our 10th annual Sustainability Symposium where we’ll celebrate all things tree. We are very pleased to present Pete Nelson of Nelson Treehouse Supply and Treehouse Masters fame as our keynote for this milestone symposium.

Pete got excited about treehouses at age 5 when his dad built him a tiny one behind the garage of their Ridgewood, NJ home. The scope and size of Pete’s treehouse fantasies expanded from there. The 1994 publication of “Treehouses; The Art and Craft of Living Out on a Limb”, was the first book of its kind, and has culminated in the publication of five more books on the subject, a thriving treehouse building and supply company, a treehouse hotel, and a hit television series on Animal Planet.

For our symposium, Pete will share “A Different Perspective in the Trees,” with many examples of his creations and get you looking at trees from an alternate point of view.

Other presentations include:

Calculating Tree Benefits Jim Chatfield – Horticulture Specialist, The Ohio State University Extension Center in Wooster

Tree Planting 101: How We Affect Tree Mortality Jennifer Braman – Manager of Urban Forestry, City of Cleveland

We will be in attendance on Saturday. We also believe in the following quote sent to us by Mile Dirr from a Canadian farmer named Nelson Henderson. “The true meaning of life is to plant trees under whose shade you do not expect to sit.”
