Art and architectural salvage in Geauga County – March 24

Cutting Edge Decorative Concrete

Learn about new and amazing ways to use concrete in your landscape designs

4767 Brecksville Road, Richfield, Ohio

Meeting will be in Greg Matta’s show room, which has some amazing examples of the future diversity of concete.

From the APLDOH President:

Hello APLD-Ohio, The Design Network and Guests,

On Saturday February 18th, The Ohio Chapter is proud and excited to present its first program of 2012.

We will be gathering at the Cutting Edge Decorative Concrete showroom at 11:00 am.  We will start by  snacking & socializing to meet one another and allow for all to arrive before we get a tour of the showroom.

Greg Mata, the owner/operator/artist will be our host and tour guide.  As designers, we are always looking for new, fresh, innovative ideas to incorporate into our designs.  This showroom will open your eyes to the vast possibilities the world of decorative concrete can offer.  I was blown away by all the techniques on display throughout the showroom such as interesting textures, forms, colors, and styles, not only for the ground, but for walls, and for tables, for outdoor kitchens, indoor functional pieces, artwork and more.

What we long for is stimulation in finding that creative edge.  You will find it on this tour. Greg will be on hand to explain applications and help with any technical questions you may have. The way cool things you will be seeing will add to your source library for any future needs for sure. It is fascinating to see all the ways decorative concrete is used today and the many added elements Greg has integrated to take concrete to another level for design. Concrete with water, glass, metal, fire, free standing art work, and lighting using fiber optics will be featured at this event.  You will take away something from this tour to begin your creative journey using decorative concrete.

We estimate finishing up by 12:30.

Afterwards, we’d like to get together for lunch and networking at the Richfield Gourmet Café, 4174 Wheatley Rd. (right by the rt. 77 and rt 271 junction, and about a mile from Greg Mata’s showroom.  The café has free wi-fi, so we suggest that everyone bring a few of their favorite internet links relating to design. Maybe we can learn some new hot ones. Also if anyone would like to bring a current design issue that they find perplexing – we might throw in some suggestions. Bring your photos on a flash drive, and we’ll go of one laptop and discuss. We think that lunch might go to 3 or 4:00.

We want to encourage the networking and discussion of what we found at the showroom and to continue with more getting to know each other to share the passion!!  We find that the best information sharing sessions are casual and take place over coffee and prove be the most valuable aspect of this group…Ohio Chapter APLD.

It seems like our relationships build and knowledge flows freely during these impromptu lunches/dinners. We learn and share resources from one another, share our love for plants, discuss design challenges and successes and this is what it is all about!

Guests are welcome and anyone thinking of joining APLD & OHIO CHAPTER  is welcome  to try us out and see how benefit.

So, come join us Feb 18th at 11am. I look forward to meeting each of you, getting to know you and SHARING THE PASSION for landscape design!

Sincerely,

Carol Palansky

APLD – Ohio Chapter President

CENTS 2012 – Kevin O’brien presented on creative design

‘GERMINATION AND PRODUCT OF CREATIVE THINKING’

Kevin O’brien     APLD Professional Member LIFESYLES LANDSCAPING INC.

KEVIN EXPANDED UPON ON HIS RECENT PRESENTATION ON CREATIVITY IN DESIGN FROM THE APLD 2011 CLEVELAND           CONFERENCE – KEVIN’S TALK WAS CREATIVE, INSIGHTFUL, AND WELL RECEIVED – HE CALLED FOR THE DESIGNER TO ALWAYS ASK WHAT, HOW, AND WHY –  TO COME UP WITH ALTERNATIVE OR UNUSUAL IDEAS FOR A PROJECT. DO YOU ALWAYS TRY SOMETHING NEW ON EVERY PROJECT? HE, LIKE FLETCHER STEELE, IS NEVER SATISFIED, AND ALWAYS TRYING TO IMPROVE. HE LISTENS TO THE CLIENT, GOES WITH HIS FIRST GUT REACTION TO A SITE, AND IS DRIVEN TO COME UP WITH COMPELLING SOLUTIONS. A STRONG IDEA WAS TO MAKE THE IMPLEMENTED BIG IDEA SO INTEGRAL, THAT CHANGES WON’T ERASE THE HEART OF THE DESIGN. THE FUN THEN STARTED WHEN KEVIN SHOWED MANY EXAMPLES FROM SITE PROJECTS AND SHOW GARDENS THAT DROVE HOME HIS POINTS. VERY CREATIVE APPLICATIONS OF A COUNTLESS VARIETY OF SITUATIONS. IMPRESSIVE.

HE ALSO RECOMMENDS THIS WEB SITE FOR IDEAS – TED.COM

THANKS KEVIN!
